        Music

I started playing trumpet in middle school. For seven years I learned the basics of music, and enjoyed being a band dork. Somehow I managed to sit first chair in both eighth grade and my senior year.

Life changing moment

Around my sophomore year of high school, my friends and I started learning how to play guitar and I've been strumming ever since. My dad bought us a cheap beater electric - a sort of knock-off Stratocaster, with a hole in the pickguard where some knob used to be. In its place was a sticker with the word "Red", so that became the guitar's name. We also had a little Fender practice amp, and we tried our hardest to get some distorted sounds out of it. But this was a step up from where we started.

Some years earlier, Jay and I got toy one-string electric guitars for Christmas, I guess. These things were about 18 inches long and had a built-in speaker that produced some real assy tones. Believe it or not, we started recording songs using these things, along with whatever else we could find around the house. Toy ukeleles, bongos, a tambourine, my sister's toy indian drum, even the drawer of our dad's desk, full of loose items. So I guess Dad was impressed enough with our creativity that he got us Red. And the Roland, and eventually a couple keyboards, and nicer guitars.

By my junior year I had picked up the bass guitar, and spent many afternoons jamming in the band room with Dan Campbell and Mike "Spanky" Yeager. My senior year I was asked to play with Scott Faust for his Senior musician role. This guy lived and breathed guitar divinity. He looked the part, played the part, and it was fun playing with him and our drummer Dan Cobb. It was short-lived, and half-jokingly I'll say it was because of creative differences.

By myself

When I got a new computer in 1999 one of the first things I did with it was record my own compositions, which I had started to write during college. This is something I've since moved away from, but tunes from those years can be found here on my site. I'd like to get back into it, but it is so time-consuming and often I'd just rather doodle and enjoy the music.
